Sketches on the train, tube and platform in December XIII

After a lovely time with family over Christmas, I make my way back home to Belvedere from Collindale in North London. Still the trains were packed, though not running frequenly and many lines were closed.

Enjoy these sketches while you can as travelling on the train/tube for may be too costly for me in the New Year on a regular basis, Hope it gets better though cos I'll really miss all these people and the great opportunity to sketch them!

I had to stand up on the train today as I was carrying so much stuff I couldn't sit down with them. In one of the sketches there was a lady who probably had been doing Xmas shopping....she just went to sleep for the whole 29 mins from London Bridge to Belvedere! That's a sketchers delight!




I couldn't find my Biro before I bought one on the way so I used a brown coloured pencil that was available in some of the sketches.




There's also a picture of me sketching I took this one myself with self timer mode on my camera, it gets a rare shot!

Both models here were seen by me on Sunday at church during the afternoon respite, helping themselves to look good.

More Londoners!

AFRO XX, 10" x 8", coloured pencil/sanguine dust, 2008

This is number 20 in my current Afro series.






The emphasis is all about the beauty of natural black hair.

I met a lovely lady, during the weekend and she had a nice looking Afro, not the kind you'll always see. I looked once and twice....then got the courage to ask if she'll like to be in my current series.....She agreed!

This was done with ghosting the sanguine dust on a self sanded watercolour paper. Then different tones of browns,reds and orange coloured pencils were used to bring out tones and details.

I visited the Saatchi Gallery this evening to view the current exhibition " The Revolution Continues- New Art from China"
Its the first time I have been to a Saatchi Gallery and the first thing that hit me was the size of the gallery rooms!

There are some really really good works on show and I would encourage anyone in London to go and have an art feast. What I enjoyed best was the basement, it had 13 life size sculptures and 13 dynamo-electric wheel chairs of "Old Persons Home 2007". The works were done by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. Please click on the link you'll be shocked at the striking life-likeness of these men in the wheel chairs- the funny thing is that they move around too!




I needed to sketch at least one of them but they all kept spinning.Then I asked one of the attendants to help me out. She then showed me one which she said won't move for the rest of the evening - I quickly sketched this guy before he started to move!



If you really want to sketch a human figure that won't let you down and is close to life, without any model fees try these guys- they are simply fantastic!
