 One of the great places in Chelsea, The Chelsea World's End. I love Chelsea, I love painting these scenes that I see commuting everyday on the way to my studio. 

I just hope I can continue painting these scenes, I see so many different scenes that interest me everyday and I don't think I'll ever run out for scenes to paint in this Chelsea area.

This was painted on a grey day.

The First 20 Paintings and Drawings of Chelsea (My Chelsea Marathon)

This has been a great discovery!

The journey of painting and drawing scenes around  the Chelsea area.

I thought I would have finished these quite earlier than this but I learned along the way that I am better with a slower pace and more quality work. I keep striving to improve and making sure that I get the spirit and the feel of atmosphere or light in any particular scene I approach.

I am a third way through on the marathon!!!

Two-Thirds to go!!!

I have really enjoyed every bit of this marathon, even though it's taken longer than I expected I am really happy with the scenes I have chosen and the way I have started to understand more about how I perceive complicated scenes and the manner in which I have resolved them.

I am ready to keep this going!

There's nothing more fun than getting out there and just enjoying the pleasure of painting outdoors!

Not all the works in this marathon are outdoor paintings but then one thing I have learnt is to keep on giving both the indoor and outdoor pieces the same spirit of the SKETCH! Which is always my goal.

I am also working on improving the Broad Pencil Technique which I have used for this scene.

The initial sketch, Foggy Morning- you see how rapid the lines flow. It's what I love about sketching.

There's always lots and loads to learn, discover and experiment!

Painting is pure addiction and sketching is the mother of all pure addictions!!

Lets get out there and paint Chelsea!!!!

This particular one is number 19 of my series of paintings and drawings of the Chelsea Riverside.


This is a view I really love and I like the way the colours explode when the sun goes down around the Chelsea Moorings.

The reflections are another great feature of this area when the sun is either going up or coming down.

The Initial Sketch- I have made sure that I get the drawing right, I always feel the painting has more hope to succeed when the drawing is right. This is vital!

To capture the light is always the goal and keeping the painting fresh and simplified!

Mid-Way through- I have worked with the "outside-in" technique here blocking in everything from the outside, all the broad shapes and then finishing inside with the details

Ashburnham Road, Off Lots Road (18) Chelsea Marathon

This is number 18 of my current series of paintings and drawings of Chelsea.

This street is near to my studio. I have been longing to painting this shop for years and I'm so happy that I have finally done it. It's a shop called FENS. They sell some really trendy antique stuff.

I didn't want the painting to be about only the shop, so when painting it I planned to have a backdrop of the Sofa.com building in it, to create some depth and perspective.

Stage 1- All set to fly! Organization is important, if you notice, all the colours are laid out in a specific order of light to dark and there's enough space to mix clean colours. There's also a nice area for my mediums- LIQUIN, IMPASTO GEL AND MAROGER.

Stage 2- This is where the painting is born, the sketch stage, everything can fall apart here, but once you get the drawing or the sketch right. There's less fuss to worry about. It's then all about painting the shapes. Here, I am working from Inside-Out. which means I finish each area from the inside and move outwards. This is quite different from the outside-in technique of starting with broad shapes and finishing with details. With this style every part gets finished from the word GO!

I think I painted this for exactly 3 hours and I sat to paint with my "Pleinaircycle" parked just opposite the shop on the other side of the road.

Stage 3- It's always good to deal with the background first and slowly whisper your way forward. That is why I have gone for the sky and trees first, then I moved to the White building, the road,  just as if I was traveling from the background to the foreground.

Stage 4- The shop then is the final phase, I took my time to make an impression of it. In Plein-air painting, it is always good to keep asking yourself-HOW CAN I SIMPLIFY what I am seeing? How can I make an IMPRESSION of the REALITY I see. How can I make that impression IN MY OWN LANGUAGE in the simplest manner with the fewest amount of brushstrokes
