Josh in Sleep mode XIV, A3 sketchbook, Sanguine/Sepia dust/Coloured pencil, 2009

This is number 14 in my current series of quick records of my son in sleep mode.

This afternoon while working on a commission that I was using sanguine and sepia dust, he fell asleep beside me. So I quickly took a break and tried to capture another sleep mode. I think I ended up pouring too much dust on the paper and it was hard to lift off.

  1. What a wonderful way to take a break. He has that perfect, hands under his head like an angel would sleep pose. I like the extra heavy dust. It really warms up the picture.

  3. First let me start off by saying that your son is really adorable :). Sleeping children>puppies any day. As for your sketch, again - very well done. He really stands out from the rest of the page with his lighter tone, and it seems to really draw attention to his face. Was the brown dusting on the curtains intentional? If so, then it was a nice touch and matches well the color of the arm chair. The only thing I'm not sure of is what's goin on right about his side and near his head; is that another cushion, or a folded-back blanket? Not sure, but other than that, it still looks realy nice :).

  4. Thanks Spider G, you have really done a solid review of the whole sketch. On the right side of his head is a pillow which was very hard to resolve from the position I was sketching from, but I can clearly understand what you mean. The dusting on the brown curtains wasn't intentional. Thanks once again!
