This is my entry into this Karin Juricks' DSFDF. It was an interesting reference from Madison Avenue in New York City.
It has always been my dream to paint scenes like this and because I am currently very busy with commissions and preparing for a group exhibition in June, I just wanted to concentrate on catching the spirit of a Rush Hour in this piece. The buildings and detail where not my focus, if I tried to fuss about that I would never get this piece done before Wednesday, and I hate missing out!. So in an Alla Prima Style, I set out to knock this off in one sitting as if I was right there painting it life. I just included figures and the busy hustle and bustle as I would have if painting from life and I really went wild with colours. I wanted this piece to have a spark of life, movement, energy and total chaos.
DETAIL
I have done this with oil on a self primed Masonite board and it joins the group of other detailed Rush Hour Paintings, I've done. All Grease to Karin's elbows for bringing me back to one of my first loves.
What an excellent painting! The cyclists, the taxis and even the blacktop of the street itself looks alive and moving! You really accomplished your goals with this one.

ReplyDeleteThings of note: You captured the lighting in the distance perfectly; not only is it beautiful, but it also adds a sense of depth and scale to the painting. The contrast it presents to the darker buildings that line the "border" of the left and right sides of the piece gives the impressionn that I'm walking down the street in the emerging dawn. Whether intentional or not, it is very striking :)
The only quibbles I might have are some of the scenes between the two taxis; I don't know if it was interntionaly meant to come off as blurred or chaotic, but I rubs me...wrong, for some reason (sorry). Other than that...hm...the gentleman hailing the taxi on the right looks a little...stiff, almost stick-figure-ish - which is odd, be cause as the lady in red on the sidewalk clearly indicates, you have a great ability to capture realistic stances and gestures on that scale and mediaum. But all in all, another great work :D

You've taken me back to NY with this one, so alive and energetic. The colors and the action in the street are more the feel of the Big Apple than the actual photograph! Definitely one of the best entries in this challenge!
