The First 20 Paintings and Drawings of Chelsea (My Chelsea Marathon)

This has been a great discovery!

The journey of painting and drawing scenes around  the Chelsea area.

I thought I would have finished these quite earlier than this but I learned along the way that I am better with a slower pace and more quality work. I keep striving to improve and making sure that I get the spirit and the feel of atmosphere or light in any particular scene I approach.

Sometimes I just paint a place because I love it, no more, no less. I have painted or drawn places that bring sweet memories. Or places I have passed through that resonate with my spirit.

I am a third way through on the marathon!!!

Two-Thirds to go!!!

I have really enjoyed every bit of this marathon, even though it's taken longer than I expected I am really happy with the scenes I have chosen and the way I have started to understand more about how I perceive complicated scenes and the manner in which I have resolved them.

I am ready to keep this going!

There's nothing more fun than getting out there and just enjoying the pleasure of painting outdoors!

Not all the works in this marathon are outdoor paintings but then one thing I have learnt is to keep on giving both the indoor and outdoor pieces the same spirit of the SKETCH! Which is always my goal.

I am also working on improving the Broad Pencil Technique which I have used for this scene.

The initial sketch, Foggy Morning- you see how rapid the lines flow. It's what I love about sketching.

There's always lots and loads to learn, discover and experiment!

Painting is pure addiction and sketching is the mother of all pure addictions!!

Lets get out there and paint Chelsea!!!!

Evening Light, Chelsea Riverside (19) Chelsea Marathon, 10" x 8", Oil on Board

This particular one is number 19 of my series of paintings and drawings of the Chelsea Riverside.


This is a view I really love and I like the way the colours explode when the sun goes down around the Chelsea Moorings.

The reflections are another great feature of this area when the sun is either going up or coming down.

The Initial Sketch- I have made sure that I get the drawing right, I always feel the painting has more hope to succeed when the drawing is right. This is vital!

To capture the light is always the goal and keeping the painting fresh and simplified!

Mid-Way through- I have worked with the "outside-in" technique here blocking in everything from the outside, all the broad shapes and then finishing inside with the details

I had to get down there to capture these lovely boats and the reflections on a nice cool evening.

Sitting down and getting really deep into the drawing is phenomenal  for me! I just love it!

The Full materials I have used here are a Daler Rowney Artist's Sketchbook, 10.4 x 8.3 inches, 150gms. Graphite, Oil base pencil, Chunky graphite, Carpenter's Pencil, Mechanical 0.7 HB pencil, Graphite dust and water.
