Two questions; Are your subjects aware that you are sketching them? I always wonder about sketching strangers in public. I've done it, but I'm kind of timid about it.
And, I see you use pen but do you also carry a brush and water with you for that wash I see?
Sometimes they are aware and sometimes they are not. Sometimes if it is great I show them and many times they have asked me to forward it to them, so I collect their e-mails. It is normal to be timid, but if you are addicted you can't help but sketch. I have had good, bad and the ugly experiences- but it is all fun! You can read more about this and tips on sketching on public transport in my blog with Winsor and Newton. Just go to www.winsornewton.com and check under Community/ Our blogs/Adebanji Alade. There are a couple of entries. Hope you find them useful.
Its not brush and water. I always arm myself with a BIC medium biro (black) and a Tombow ABT Dual Brush Pen pen No75 Cool Grey. It is simply amazing. It helps me with the tones, like a wash. I use the thicker end of the pen as it has two ends.

Excellent. Thanks so much for the info. I'll check out the W & N blog.
