EMOTIONS VII, 8" x 10", Sanguine dust/pencil on Museum Mount Cardboard, 2009

This is number 7 in my current Emotions series.

I recently sketched this guy in one of my previous posts.

These are some of the procedures I take when doing these drawings:

Here I have used the sanguine dust with a ghosting technique applied to the board with tissue paper and carefully I have used a an eraser to take out highlights as if I was painting with white.

Here I start to add detail with the Sanguine Oil base pencil, I like it because it doesn't get dusty and messy as the oil free version.

Wow, gorgeous drawing, and fascinating process. Thanks for sharing how you did this.

When you are discussing sanguine dust, is this a product you create by shaving a sanguine pastel stick? Have not heard of this, although I've shaved pastels.

I am supposing the emotion depicted here is awe...he looks as if he's seeing something beyond belief. Remarkable work.

well, its safe to say that you have inspired my to paint and draw. I'm now starting a project at my school, where i do a color version of my sketches, wich will ultimately result on a series of paintings: i will try to capture the overall emotions and habits fo the people i draw. And once again, thanks!

Thanks Mona! I have shaved pastel sticks too, but this sanguine dust is actually a product. It is mabe by CRETACOLOR and the one I have is in a plastic container of 230g. They have the sepia version, charcoal version and graphite version. It was from the instructions on this product I learned about Oil base pencils and they have been a blessing ever since!

Thanks James, you be the jugde! I like your interpretation about this Emotion and sometimes like to leave it for the viewer!

No one plays an instrument well, without being caught up in some sort of emotion!

Andre, what more can I say, I am happy you are inspired and doing a project on sketches to colour. Please feel free to ask any questions and always put your whole life and heart into anything you do- it will produce life in return!

Thank you Adebanji, I'm checking this special dust out at the art store along with some comb brushes Akiko recommends. I am so grateful to be able to exchange ideas and information with colleagues and friends online, no matter how distant we live from one other!
